Institute Fall 2001
WTW
Institute 2001 was a great success!
The
institute for Cohort One of the Walking the Walk Project was held
September 26-28 at the Montreat Conference Center in Montreat, N.C.
Each community involved, Wake, Durham and Orange-Chatham, developed
a Community Action Plan while at the institute. You can view these
on the individual community pages of this web site. In addition,
each person developed an individual Back-Home Plan. As part of the
institute evaluation and follow-up, our staff will contact each
of the institute participants in six months for an interview about
their individual progress. Also in six months, each Community Action
Team (CAT) will meet with their respective Campus-Community Diversity
Consortium (CCDC) to share details about the institute and to discuss
the progress of their Community Action Plans.

Purpose
of Walking the Walk Institutes
Planned
to meet the priorities identified in advance by the Campus-Community
Diversity Consortia, the three-day Walking the Walk Insititute will
include unique learning opportunites. The institute is designed
to be different from traditional content-focused workshops or conferences,
by offering many different kinds of interactions and resources.
Some of these include:
- presentations
organized around increasing the cultural and linguistic diversity
and cultural competence of the workforce serving young children
(with and without disabilities) and their families through efforts
that include recruitment, preparation, support and linkages;
- opportunities
to learn by doing, as many sessions will involve participants
in the activities being illustrated;
- access
to human resources selected to match the interest and planning
priorities of participants;
- dedicated
blocks of time for participants to meet, discuss, think and plan
-
an interactive library of instructional resources to read, watch
and use.
