Student Instructional Dilemma: A Strategy for Exploring Culturally Responsive Practices
Students encounter many perplexing dilemmas in their encounters with diverse young children and their families. Each of these contains opportunities for exploring deeply held beliefs, values, and assumptions and for developing new cultural understandings. This session will explore an instructional strategy for using student dilemmas to more deeply examine the cultural meanings of dilemmas and to develop students’ abilities to act as advocates and allies for diverse children and families.

Measuring the Difference You Make: Evaluation Resources
This session will explore evaluation measures and methods related to cultural, linguistic, and ability diversity in preservice education. In addition to an overview of the measures used and results of the Crosswalks Study, the presenter will share resources to evaluate the impact of your personnel preparation efforts at program, faculty, student, community, and child/family levels.

Beyond Recruitment: Supporting Entering Early Childhood Professionals from Underrepresented Groups
Is it enough for programs to increase the number of preservice teachers of color they prepare? Or do they also need to think about preparing them differently to be strong, resilient advocates? This session will introduce dilemmas and issues faced by preservice teachers of color. Successful alternatives for preparing entering professionals to become leaders and advocates for diverse young children and their families will be shared. Discussion will focus on strategies and activities that can be used to address issues of racism, power, privilege and social justice.

Inclusion Resources
This session will offer activities, videotapes, print materials and other resources to increase the emphasis on inclusion of young children with disabilities and special needs in all early childhood environments and settings. In addition to a “hot off the press” synthesis of inclusion research, participants will experience an overview highlighting methods and materials that are readily available and low cost/no cost.

Family and Community Practica
Growing competent, confident personnel requires providing students with opportunities to collaborate with diverse families and partners in variety of community settings. How do you create and integrate those learning opportunities into your program? This session will offer strategies for supporting collaboration between preservice programs and community/agency partners. New ways of thinking about community resources and learning opportunities will be offered and supports for finding and growing inclusive community placements will be shared.

Why and How Should We Teach Early Childhood Students and Other Service Providers About Inclusion and Natural Learning Environments?
Inclusion and Natural Learning Environments (NLE) refer to where children receive services, the practices and supports provided to all children as they engage in daily activities and routines, and the outcomes we pursue for children and families. This session will explore different approaches to preparing students to design, implement and support opportunities that build the potential of all young children, and especially those with disabilities and special needs. Presenters will emphasize efforts that lead to adopting a positive philosophy about inclusion and NLE, learning about evidence-based practices and how to individualize interactions for all children, and accessing resources and supports related to inclusion and NLE.

Diversity Resources
This session will highlight activities, videotapes, print materials and other resources to increase the emphasis on culture and diversity in any course you teach. Presenters will offer a guided tour of favorite methods and materials for use in preservice education, including where and how to order. The emphasis will be on items that are good, readily available and low cost/no cost.

Infusing Diversity: From Vision to Action through Syllabus Deconstruction and Reconstruction
When someone reads your course description, can they see diversity, culture and language as a valued element of the class? How do your courses help ensure that teachers are prepared to work in diverse communities? This session will present a process for analyzing/deconstructing program syllabi to reflect diversity in all aspects of coursework. Participants will practice aligning syllabi, instructional strategies, field experiences and resources with their evolving program vision for infusing diversity.

The Price of Silence: Raising Issues that Aren’t Discussed Enough
Sometimes the things that are hardest to talk about are also the most important to talk about. This session will offer structures and strategies for discussing complex and thorny topics like bias, prejudice, and privilege. Strategies for integrating personal journeys and experiences will be covered, along with ways to create safe environments for discussion and exploration.

Supporting the Development of Culturally Responsive Dispositions
Preservice teachers enter programs with biases and assumptions about children and families with cultures and languages different from their own and a limited understanding of multiculturalism. What types of experiences can influence the willingness and ability of college students to engage in teaching practices that recognize and respect the diversity of their students? This session will provide an overview of recent research on this topic and highlight the five components of preservice education that can best support the development of culturally responsive dispositions.

This session will provide a whirlwind tour of key content, format, strategies, and resources for preparing personnel to provide culturally competent services. Presenters will include a significant focus on current research and knowledge about second language acquisition and other implications for practice.

Making Room in the Circle: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Families in Early Childhood Settings
Research supports the importance of early childhood experiences on the formation of self-identity and self-esteem in young children. Nationwide, children and families struggle with ways to support this process, as well as their need and desire to feel recognized and included in early care and education programs and communities. This session will provide an opportunity for open dialogue about these issues and to reflect on attitudes and biases that exist in our society and within us. Participants will learn about methods, models and materials that faculty can use to prepare future professionals to create more welcoming environments for LGBT individuals and implement curricula that include all families.

Transforming Preservice Programs: Three Perspectives
What does it take to transform a preservice program? What circumstances or events motivate significant changes? How can family members and community partners be resources to the change? How might coursework, practica, and program practices look after the transformation? Learn about and discuss three options in this session. Presenters will share three perspectives, highlighting experiences at George Mason University (VA), UCLA (CA), and the University of North Carolina, Pembroke.

Responsive Teaching of Culturally, Linguistically and Ability Diverse Young Children in the Classroom
