For the past fourteen years Sandy has offered technical assistance, consultation and training to improve the inclusive opportunities and transition of young children with special needs in the eastern North Carolina. She works closely with child care providers, early intervention and preschool staff, child care resource and referral and Smart Start personnel, as well as families who have children with special needs. A transplanted Hoosier, Sandy represents the parent perspective for PFI. She and her husband have two children, the youngest being born with Down syndrome. The entire family has been committed in allowing him to grow up with his non-disabled friends. Sandy and her husband help coach the local Bocce Ball Special Olympic team and have added a court in their backyard. It now has become a weekly event to hold neighborhood tournaments with nearby neighbors and friends. Before coming to PFI, Sandy helped establish the Family Support Network of Eastern North Carolina and served as its director for five years. She still serves as a resource and support parent for the parent-to-parent group. |
