Reports of Early Childhood Teacher Preparation Programs in the US

The National Prekindergarten Center (NPC) conducted in 2004 a national survey of early childhood teacher preparation programs at 2- and 4-year colleges and universities. These programs prepare individuals to work with children any ages from birth through age 4. We collected data from most early childhood teacher preparation programs in the US and are pleased to present both a national report and state reports. We provide individual reports for 45 states that had at least five early childhood teacher preparation programs and a response rate large enough to be considered representative of the state (75% or higher). A copy of the survey used in the study is also provided.

The purpose of the national and state reports is to provide basic descriptive information about the program, faculty, and student characteristics of early childhood teacher preparation programs that prepare individuals to work with children younger than age 5. The reports focus primarily on programs offering the CDA or other certification, Associate’s degrees, Bachelor’s degrees, and Master’s degrees.

The study and reports were funded by the Foundation for Child Development
