Family Literacy
The Partners for Literacy Curriculum can be used with family literacy programs that offer early childhood education, parenting education, parent and child interactive literacy activities, and adult education. All components are integrated through the use of common materials and strategies.
The Partners for Literacy Curriculum has been successfully implemented with children and families from a wide range of backgrounds and languages. PfL has been used with family literacy programs in over 30 states and with over 300 participating staff and directors.
Research on Family Literacy
The Classroom Literacy Interventions and Outcomes Study (CLIO)
The PfL Curriculum was selected, through a U.S. Department of Education competition, as one of two early childhood education and parenting curricula to be used in the national experimental study of federally-funded Even Start Family Literacy Programs. This research study, the Classroom Literacy Interventions and Outcomes (CLIO), has been funded by the U.S. Department of Education to examine if two research-based curricula will influence child and parent outcomes more positively than currently implemented curricula in Even Start programs. Westat Research Association is conducting the research study. Approximately 120 programs in over 30 states have participated. Baseline data were collected in the 2003-2004 academic year, and the interventions were conducted between 2004 and 2006. Outcome data should be available in the spring of 2007. The FPG Child Development Institute received a contract to develop and implement an intervention for the CLIO study. The Principal Investigator of Partners for Literacy is Barbara H. Wasik, Ph. D.
