Background
A brief history of fragile X research at the University
of North Carolina
Fragile X research began at UNC in 1994 when Don Bailey, director
of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, launched
a longitudinal study of preschool boys with fragile X syndrome (FXS)
with a grant from the US Department of Education. Interest in FXS
research quickly grew at UNC, and additional
FXS studies have been funded by the National Institute of Health,
US Department of Education, NICHD, National Institute of Disability
and Rehabilitation Research, National Institute on Child Health
and Human Development, Ronald McDonald Charities, and FRAXA.
The Fragile X Research Registry has been started to assist the
dedicated and growing team of research scientists at UNC who are
continuing to pursue knowledge about the cause and treatment of
fragile X syndrome.
