Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) Resources
In 2009, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) released the third edition of its principles and guidelines for teachers and others in the field of early childhood education. Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) describes teaching practices that ensure that young children learn and develop to their fullest potential. The third edition of DAP adds rich and robust new dimensions to the conversation including thoughtful attention to practices that will reduce learning gaps and increase achievement for each and every child. Several resources to support understanding and use of the new DAP resources are currently available to download from the NAEYC DAP website (http://www.naeyc.org/dap/). The are:
- The 2009 NAEYC Position Statement on Developmentally Appropriate Practice
- Key Messages of the Position Statement
- When DAP Meets GAP: Strategies for Promoting Peaceful Coexistence
Between Developmentally Appropriate Practice and the Need to Address the Achievement Gap (PowerPoint slides from a presentation by Dorothy Strickland)
- The new Developmentally Appropriate Practice video, which includes a companion viewer’s guide.
