Effective Online Teaching
Bill Pelz, Professor of Psychology at Herkimer County Community College was the recipient of the 2003 Sloan-C Award for Excellence in Online Teaching. In an article in the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks (Volume 8, Issue 3, June 2004), a publication of the Sloan Consortium, Pelz identifies his three key principles for effective eTeaching:
- Let the students do (most of) the work (e.g., student led discussions; students find and discuss web resources; students help each other learn; students grade their own homework assignments; case study analysis)
- Interactivity is the heart and soul of effective asynchronous learning (e.g., collaborative research papers; research proposal team projects)
- Strive for presence (e.g., social presence; cognitive presence; teaching presence)
