Talking to Children; Why Some Mothers Do It More

Study to Continue Ground-Breaking Abecedarian Work

FPG will identify an urban, early childhood program to incorporate the intervention strategies from its ground-breaking Abecedarian Project. The Abecedarian Project was among the first studies to demonstrate the importance of high quality early care and education. The current study attempts to take one step toward reliable, scientific evidence that these interventions are still needed and have the ability to produce powerful results today.

Minority Segregation and Reading Study to Expand with New Grant

FPG researcher Kirsten Kainz will expand her research on minority segregation and reading. This next phase of research will investigate the associations among teacher quality, instructional quality, reading outcomes and segregated schooling contexts.

FPG Contributes to Newly Launched TriangleMom2Mom.com

FPG Director Sam Odom and FPG Child Care Program Director Maggie Connolly are part of the expert panel for the News and Observers’ new web community for mothers—www.TriangleMom2Mom.com. The site offers moms a place to share, talk, meet other moms, create blogs, chat, and compare photos.

Songbook Supports Inclusion in Outdoor Play; Podcast Also Available

Songs & Laughter on the Playground, by FPG Visiting Scholar Petra Kern, includes 17 goal-oriented songs supporting outdoor play for children with and without disabilities. All songs have been created in clinical practice settings and sung many times by children, teachers, and therapists. Strategies for successful implementation and suggestions for different ability levels are included.
