Crossing the Language Divide

A case study published in the August 2007 issue of the Early Childhood Education Journal by FPG investigator Christina Gillanders demonstrates how English-speaking prekindergarten teachers can cross the language barrier to build positive relationships with English language learners.

New Study to Examine How Child Care Can Meet Needs of Latino Families

Few Latino families take advantage of child care programs, and those that do typically do not see the school readiness benefits that other children attending high quality child care programs experience. A new research project will explore how Latino families choose care for preschool children and how they define quality.

FPG Researchers will study families across North Carolina as part of a three-year project funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

FPG Seeking to Hire NECTAC Director (Closed)

FPG has formed a search committee to hire a new director of the National Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center (NECTAC). NECTAC’s mission is to strengthen service systems to ensure that children with disabilities (birth through five) and their families receive and benefit from high quality, culturally appropriate, and family-centered supports and services.

FPG Child Care Program Earns National NAEYC Accreditation

FPG’s Child Care Program is one of the first early childhood programs to earn accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) under its new more rigorous review process.

The FPG Child Care program currently serves 83 children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age. The program is designed to demonstrate and disseminate information about quality child care and innovative practices related to the early learning and development of young children. As a result, more than 500 people from around the world visit the program each year. It has been NAEYC accredited since 1994 and has a 5-star North Carolina child care license.

FPG Partnership to Develop State-Wide Training Plans To Support Early Childhood Inclusion

FPG will work in partnership with the Napa County Office of Education to implement the Head Start/Hilton Training Program (SpecialQuest). The newly funded three year project will build on the learnings from ten years of implementing the SpecialQuest project with Early Head Start Programs across the country. SpecialQuest will work intensely with ten states to develop a collaborative state-wide training plan to support inclusive early childhood services (B through 5).

FPG to Evaluate Eastern Kentucky School Readiness Effort (Project CLICK)

FPG will be part of an effort to better prepare children from low-income families in Eastern Kentucky for school. Project CLICK (Cradling Literacy In Children In Kentucky) provides early childhood educators in the region with professional development focused on understanding and supporting children's language and literacy learning and social-emotional development. The ongoing, comprehensive, research-based professional development is an initiative of Zero to Three, Save the Children, and the Eastern Kentucky Child Care Coalition.

New Research Synthesis on Early Childhood Inclusion Available

Research Synthesis Points on Early Childhood Inclusion is a summary of key conclusions drawn from a review of the literature on early childhood inclusion. It may be downloaded for distribution and use in a variety of contexts including professional development, policy development, planning, advocacy, and grant writing. The Synthesis was development by FPG's National Professional Development Center on Inclusion (NPDCI).

NPDCI also developed a companion piece for professional development providers. The Professional Development Activity: Looking at the Data on Inclusion may be used to facilitate discussion among participants on their reactions to these research points and application to their work.
