Improving Early Reading Skills for Children in Poverty

Researchers from FPG Child Development Institute and the School of Education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that classroom and school characteristics had a larger effect on student’s long-term reading abilities than the method of instruction or the child’s background.

FPG Mourns the Loss of National Leader and Colleague

FPG is sad to announce that Dr. Pat Trohanis, Senior Scientist at FPG and long-term Director of the National Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center, died Saturday, June 23, in his home. His loss will be felt at FPG, UNC and throughout the field of early childhood special education. His warmth, wit and insight into challenging early childhood policy issues helped improve the lives of young children with disabilities and their families across the country and the globe. Pat is survived by his wife, Donna, his mother Mary Trohanis, his daughter Zoe, and her husband, and 2 brothers, Andy Trohanis and Bill Trohanis.

Memorial donations in Pat's name can be made to the St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 1149, Durham, NC 27702.

FPG Project Featured in Documentary

“My Brilliant Brain,” a three-part documentary series, explores the inner workings of the human brain. The first episode features FPG’s Abecedarian Project. It airs July 9th in the UK on Channel 5 and later this summer in the United States on the National Geographic Channel.

FirstSchool Op-ed Published in Chapel Hill News

An op-ed by Sharon Ritchie, co-director of FirstSchool and Neil Pedersen, superintendent of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools was published in the July 11th issue of the Chapel Hill News. It provides an update on FirstSchool’s progress in Carrboro and Chapel Hill. FirstSchool is an initiative led by the FPG Child Development Institute to provide a framework for integrating the best of early childhood education and elementary education to serve young children in pre-kindergarten through third grade. In addition to working in Carrboro and Chapel Hill, FirstSchool will work in Orange County schools and hopes to partner with other schools across the nation.

Seventh Annual Inclusion Institute to be Held July 31

The Inclusion Institute—the premier educational opportunity for anyone involved in the care and education of children birth through age five with special needs in inclusive settings—will be held July 31 through August 2, 2007. Attendees will learn about the latest research findings and resources to guide inclusive policy, professional development and practice; develop collaborative relationships and cross-agency systems to support early childhood inclusion; gain awareness of strategies and models to support inclusive services; and have the opportunity to meet, learn from and problem solve with peers.
