UNC/FPG Masthead

For Researchers

FPG scientists use a variety of methodologies to seek new knowledge. Their work in applying new methods is as much a contribution to developmental science as their findings are. While much of their methodological work is shared through their writings and professional presentations, FPG scientists also provide training in research methodologies. Examples of current or recent FPG projects that advance methodology and training are listed below. Other projects can be identified by our Search Projects feature. References to publications on research methods by FPG scientists and fellows are provided below.

Data Management and Analysis Center Services

The FPG Data Management and Analysis Center (DMAC) is available to provide design, statistical analysis, and data-management services for researchers beyond FPG. Its high quality services have been recognized by funding sources such as the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Education, and the NC Department of Health and Human Services.

FPG Projects Providing Training in Research Methods

FPG projects provide short and long-term training and mentoring in research methods and skills for doctoral and post-doctoral students from a variety of disciplines.

Projects Advancing Research Methods

Advances in research methods at FPG include the use of ethnographic and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to study resource allocation in low income families in urban and rural communities and a study of the process of integrating qualitative and quantitative methods to identify characteristics of research designs and teams that facilitate integration.

Publications on Research Methods

FPG scientists have published papers on ethnography, the use of technology in research, statistical analysis, and other topics on the conduct of research.
