About FPG
FPG was founded in 1966 by a small group of scientists who had a vision — to conduct research that would make a difference in children's lives, help families, and inform policies. Today we are one of the nation's largest multidisciplinary centers for studying young children and their families. We have produced groundbreaking work that has shaped how the nation cares for and educates young children.
Among FPG’s many achievements is the Abecedarian Project, which began with a group of preschoolers who entered FPG in 1972. Findings from this longitudinal study are frequently cited by experts and policymakers when discussing the importance of quality early childcare. This project continues to gather information on the positive influences of early intervention that can still be measured as these children have aged into adulthood.
Recognizing the importance of high quality care, FPG researchers went on to develop measurement tools that are used across the country and throughout the world to ensure that local programs are providing high quality child care.
Today, FPG consists of more than 200 researchers, students and staff working on projects dealing with parent and family support; early care and education; child health and development; early identification and intervention; equity, access and inclusion; and early childhood policy. Our work crosses many disciplines—anthropology, audiology, biostatistics, education, epidemiology, nursing, occupational therapy, pediatrics, physical therapy, psychiatry, psychology, public health, social work, sociology, and speech and hearing sciences.
Research provides important knowledge, yet it alone does not improve practice. We are committed to sharing the information we generate with the public; enhancing the lives of children and families is our top priority. Therefore, we have a long-standing commitment to outreach. We place a high value on building partnerships and coalitions that enhance our communications with the public.
Like other top tier research organizations, our work is published in the most respected journals and publications in our field. What sets us apart is our effort to ensure that parents, educators and those who work with children and families benefit from our work in a timely manner. FPG is named for Dr. Frank Porter Graham (1886-1972), president of UNC, 1930-1949 and US Senator, 1949-1951.
